Common Misconceptions
or
Why You Need an Attorney

There are a few common misconceptions that lead many people to believe that they do not need an attorney to handle their automobile accident case.

Mistaken Belief #1:

Insurance companies exist to provide prompt, fair compensation in the event of an accident.

Reality:

Insurance companies are obligated to their shareholders and policy holders, not to people who have been injured in auto accidents.  Whether you are seeking compensation from your insurance company, or from that of another party who was responsible for the accident, it is in the company's best interest to avoid paying whenever possible. While ascertaining liability and coverage may seem cut and dry to you, in reality the insurance companies have armies of attorneys and adjusters that have created a plethora of legal reasons to reduce or deny coverage.

To put it simply, the insurance companies will not pay unless they absolutely have to. They are very good at finding “legitimate” reasons not to pay. You need an experienced attorney to handle your claim for you so that you are not cheated out of the compensation you deserve.

Mistaken Belief #2:

The accident is minor, so there is no need for an attorney, or even to file a police report.

Reality:

There is no such thing as a "minor" accident, and it is always important to file a report with the police. (See "What to do After an Accident".) At this firm alone, we have seen hundreds of cases in which an accident victim at first believed the injuries to be minor, only to have it become clear days later that they required thousands of dollars in medical treatment and rehabilitation. Spinal injuries, in particular, often seem like strains that will go away after a few days, when, in reality, they may get worse without treatment and often take a long time to heal.

Mistaken Belief #3:

Retaining an attorney is too expensive.

Reality:

Your initial consultation with Gary Stewart Seflin is free.   He will only receive money if you do.  In fact, the difference between what you are likely to recover when represented versus when handling your claim yourself is often so great that you cannot afford not to consult an attorney.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is that whenever you are involved in an automobile accident, whether as a driver, a passenger, or a pedestrian, you need an experienced attorney to safeguard your interests. Remember:

  1. You have nothing to lose because the attorney's services costs you nothing out-of-pocket;

  2. You will gain a much needed advocate during a time of physical, emotional, and financial stress; and,

  3. You will be guaranteed the compensation for your damages which you deserve, and which you would be unlikely to obtain on your own.
